My husband and I used this guidebook for our honeymoon to Athens, Santorini and Mykonos. We were not very impressed wtih it. I have to caveat this by saying I rarely use a guidebook to plan trips - I am a child of the Internet age and primarily rely upon review sites like Yelp and TripAdvisor. But its a little harder in foreign countries and I remembered my parents using Fodor's to plan the trips we took when I was a child, so I bought this book. The best part of this book, I think, is the overview of the different islands and the comparision for them. We found everything to be said in these "overview" sections to be generally true for the islands we went to. We had already decided which 2 islands we were going to visit before buying the guidebok, but I can see how this would be a helpful guide if you are trying to figure out where to go. There is also an A to Z Cruise section, which covers all the cruise lines that visit Greece and compares them. I obviously haven't traveled on most of them, but the comments about the ones I have been on (Royal Caribbean, for example) seemed generally in line with what I experienced, so it may also be a helpful book if you are trying to choose a cruise line.We used it primarily for suggested activities and restaurant recommendations and were not impressed with it for those purposes. We visited two restaurants that were marked as Fodor's Choice in the guidebook - inclusion in the guidebook at all means they are recommended, the star for Fodor's Choice denotes a very highly recommended restaurant. The first, Platanos Taverna in Athens was adequate but the food was nothing special and it was more expensive than neighboring tavernas. The other restaurant, Blue Note, in Imerovigli, Santorini had a stunning view but really bad food and AWFUL service. Both of these restaurants seemed like classic tourist traps to us, and I thought the whole point of a guidebook was to avoid those. I don't think any of our hotels were in the guidebook, and we were happy with all of them and beyond thrilled with our hotel in Santorini, Esperas Traditional Houses. I think the exclusion of this hotel from the guidebook is a huge mistake. If you read the guidebook about Oia hotels, it makes you think you can pay over $500 a night to stay on the caldera side with a sunset view, or stay in a budget hotel with no view. I searched on TripAdvisor and found our hotel, which, while not cheap, was less than half the price of most of the hotels recommended by the guidebook and had a stunning caldera/sunset view and beautiful rooms with large private terraces. I think you can do much better on your own using TripAdvisor for hotels and restaurants. There is also a lot of free information out there to help you plan activities (although our activities in the islands mostly consisted of walking around and taking photos) and the locals in your hotels can probably do a better job of pointing you to good things to see than this guidebook can. I doubt I will buy another Fodor's guidebook.
I thought this book was fine and would have given it 4 stars normally since I typically like another guide book comany better. However, I am giving it 5 stars because we went to a resturant from the book that ended up to be the highlight of the trip. It had the most amazing fresh grilled octopus and I wish I got a second order because i miss it so much. It involves a lot of reading but it did provide some good things when you take the time to read.
As with all Fodor's Guides this one is fantastic. Very well written and a great way to grasp the difference in the islands.
On my trip to Greece I used both Fodors and Rick Steve's guidebooks. I will never again buy a Fodors guidebook if there is a Rick Steve's book available! I was completely frustrated by the lack of common sense information in Fodors book, and by the difficulty in navigating my way through the Kindle version. There is no index, and even finding a map of the Greek Islands in this book was a chore.RICK Steve's books lay out information in an easy to navigate format, give you an index to find information easily, ahd provide you with a wealth of common sense facts about visiting an area, most importantly how to move independently through a city by metro, taxi, bus, train, visiting hours and costs of museums, cultural advice, etc etc. -- in other words, all the information you REALLY need to know.I have just returned from my trip and am going to ask Amazon for a refund on the Fodors Greek guidebook, as it was utterly useless to me.
Very helpful for planning our own trip. Might have more about pensions and hotel hunting.
