The Walking Dead: Here's Negan, by Robert Kirkman

Review

LIBRARY JOURNAL -- Negan is a big-time jerk. Hyperaggressive, he bullies and dominates the kids he is entrusted with as a coach. He's also cheating on his wife, who is dying of cancer. When she finally succumbs after her long battle, Negan is confronted with an unprecedented situation when she crawls off her death bed as a member of the living dead. In fact, a major zombie outbreak occurs simultaneously with her death, leaving him with no option but to fight his way out of the hospital against rampaging undead hordes. Negan discovers, however, that while the very self-centered and violent nature of his personality was problematic for navigating the rules of normal society, the very same qualities might just allow him to thrive amid the ruins of humanity's few living survivors. The creative team of Kirkman (Invincible), Charlie Adlard (Codeflesh), Cliff Rathburn (Super Dinosaur), and Dave Stewart (Hellboy) supply fans of the venerable horror series with character development for the repugnant leader who has run roughshod over Rick Grimes, Michonne, and the other survivors in both the comics and TV series.Verdict While it doesn't contain many of the main characters fans know and love, this stand-alone volume does offer the oddly compelling origin story of the most hated man of any zombie apocalypse.-Douglas Rednour, Georgia State Univ. If you're a fan of The Walking Dead, but you didn't want to buy a monthly magazine publication to read small chunks of Negan's history spread out over the course of a year, then Here's Negan! is the collection for you. This 70 page hardback tells the backstory of The Walking Dead's most controversial villain, offering both context to who he becomes in the wake of the zombie apocalypse, and a brief glimpse at how he interacted with his family, friends, and job in a perfectly normal world. Without going too deeply so as to avoid spoilers, it's safe to say that the Negan personality was there long before the world ended. Actually, he's so over-the-top it's kind of hard to believe he ever managed to function successfully in polite society, but I guess it takes all sorts to move the world. There's nothing groundbreaking in this storyline. It's not going to fundamentally change The Walking Dead, or even how you view Negan, but as a stand alone arc it's well worth reading. The $20 price tag is a bit steep for what equates to roughly three issues, but if you can get it on sale -- I pre-ordered it for $13 -- then I'd suggest giving it a read. It's a good stop gap for anyone who only reads the parent series as trades rather than month-to-month.Incidentally: if you look at the Kindle reviews for this book, people are complaining that it is only around 20 to 25 pages long. Either they're reviewing the Kindle preview, or Amazon incorrectly uploaded a truncated version of the book. I've seen at least one reviewer edit their review to indicate the book re-downloaded and is the proper, 70 page length. If you plan to purchase digitally rather than the hardback, it should be good to go now.

I am up to date with TWD comic and have no plans to discontinue reading it. It is, as most readers already know, deep and still evolving. This short (and I mean really short) background of Negan is, for us fans, an interesting read with a good explanation of Negan's wife, Lucille and how his manifestation into a foul-mouthed, relentless killer and "leader" came to be. Would I recommend this for the fans of the TV show? No. Most won't care---indeed, from what I read in reviews, most want Negan gone. *Spoiler Alert* He has been gone in the comics for quite a while now. Will he return? Certainly a possibility.Since I purchased this book, the price has come down a few dollars. I am glad I purchased it, but will I revisit it? Not likely.4 stars, because I love TWD. One star removed for the price I paid.Still: Recommended for fans.

Fun, short read. For those of us obsessed with the walking dead, this is a must have for your collection. It explains who Negan was at day zero and ends with explaining the bat.The only allowable complaint is that we want more. But that’s what you get for reading a series...

A short, interesting look at Negan, before and during the early stages of the outbreak, I'm curious to see where they take it from here. A good read for any WD fan.

It was cool to see Negan's backstory, but it was too short and felt glossed over - more like a summary than a story, really. I wish it had been more fleshed out.

Once again, Kirkman has done it again. Ever since Negan appeared in the comics, readers have been asking for a background story on this multifaceted character and boy did Kirkman deliver. This is a great origin story for an even greater comic series!

A good look at the supreme anti-hero of The Walking Dead before he became Negan. The art is typical TWD, and the story is interesting. I wish it had been a little longer, but worth a read for any fan.

It took about 15 min to read the entire book. It felt rushed like Kirkman wrote it just to give fans a back story. There wasn’t much detail to it. Still leaves a lot of questions that could have been answered had this book not been so rushed.
