I had the original 1979 or 1980 version as a kid, and I ordered this for my son in a fit of nostalgia when I saw a random picture of the book somewhere. Unfortunately, the part of the original edition that truly lit up my imagination as a kid (a path leading to studying aerospace engineering and getting a PhD) -- the hypothetical concept art of what life might look like on other planets -- is absent from the revised 1986 edition. No more ever-stomping Venusians, no more Plutonian zistles. Just some updated pictures of the actual Space Shuttle.

This book is what got me interested in astronomy, physics, and space travel!When I was a kid, I would take trips to the library with my parents. I remember checking this book out multiple times, just to look at the photographs and illustrations, and read the wonderful descriptions of the various objects I was looking at.I'd been searching for this book for years, however, that was challenging without remembering the title or author's name. (I was a kid when I saw it last, about 30 years ago). I had tried several options, and never found what I was looking for. Then, I searched for something I was sure was in the book: life on Jupiter. That did it! I found an image that I remembered from the book. From there, it was a simple image search to find out what the book title was...and now, I'm sharing this with my own son. He's about the same age as me when I discovered the book.

This is a wonderful book that is thoughtfully written and beautifully illustrated. I have a degree in physics (with a background in astronomy), and nothing that I read struck me as being even borderline spurious or overly simplified. A great gift for any young person with a budding interest in astronomy and astrophysics (or adults for that matter!).

I read this book as a young lad in the early 80's, and it continues to fascinate me. As a child, I found it immediately accessible, yet serious - I loved that the author explained the heady topics of science and our solar system to me without condescending like my 4th-grade science teacher. In fact, it fueled my interest in astronomy and was a companion to me during spectacular summer nights with my telescope.As an adult, I realize that "Our Universe" paints an excellent picture of what we knew about the planets, thought about space travel, and planned for the future - it's fun to see what we got right, and what we've discovered since. While some of the material is dated, "Our Universe" is an engaging view of our solar system and I consider it a staple for the bookshelf of any amateur astronomer, young or old.

I remember pouring over this book when I was in elementary school over and over again. This book is what sparked a life long love and fascination of the stars and cosmos itself. My wife and I are having our first child and I was so surprised that I could still get my hands on this book. though it's several years until our boy will be able to understand this book I'm way glad I got it. The book came in good condition with little to no damage apart from some writing on the inside as I think it was a gift as some point to some dudes nephew. What a great buy and almost all the information is still 100% correct (though some info needs to be added I'm sure like dark energy and dark matter).

Please dont take my 1 star as an insult to the publication. It is excellent and should be in every home.. My 1 star is because I did not receive the version advertised. Iwas looking for the original first release (with the Alien chapter) I received the "revised" release which replaced that chapter with great Space Shuttle stuff... AGAIN you should buy this book, just know the release you are receiving is not the 1980 release, but rather the 85 release.

This is truly one of the greatest photo compilations of our universe that's been around for more than 25 years. I purchased this book when my oldest son was 10 or 12 years old. It got ruined over the years so I purchased this newer replacement. The universe hadn't changed that much in the past 30 years but our knowledge has, e.g., the current "COSMOS" tv series with Neil deGrasse Tyson. The book was a timely gift for my son since he is following every episode of Cosmos and using the "Our Universe" book as a great reference.

My mom had this book in our bookshelf for as long as I can remember. When I was growing up, I used to love sitting and just looking at all the pictures, especially the ones about what alien life on moons and plantets in our solar system might look like. After many years of searching, I finally figured out what the title to this book was (my mom has it put away somewhere in her basement and couldn't remember either) and decided to get my own copy. Yes, the information in the book is outdated, but since I really liked it for the pictures, that wasn't a deal breaker for me.
