High drama and elaborate verbiage? Of course not. That is not what we look for in thrillers of the South Florida genre. Escapism? Oh heck yes! Quick moving and fun. Kurt Hunter was introduced in the latest Mac Travis novel, and he's a fun character. He's not a fix-everything-with-a-bent-hairpin-and-duct tape hero. He is a slightly befuddled civil servant (ranger in Biscayne Bay Park) who has to deal with his own lack of understanding of south Florida and salt water (he was transferred here in kind of a witness protection program from his ranger job in the Pacific Northwest) as well as a boss who is just trying to cruise to retirement without having his boat rocked. IT'S REAL PEOPLE!Now, I received an advance copy of the book in exchange for a truthful review. As an author myself I know how important reviews can be. This is a truthful review (in fact I did buy my own copy of the book). YOU SHOULD READ THIS BOOK. IT'S GOOD. IT'S FUN. WHY HAVEN'T YOU DOWNLOADED IT YET!?David Thatcher WilsonSmith Beach PressAuthor of The Demon Series of books
This was my first Steve Brecker book. It will be my last. There were too many page filling paragraphs about fishing or docking a boat that didn’t add anything to the plot. And then it all ended suddenly, the crime sort of figured out, but not entirely, and a cliff hanger left for the next episode, which I’ll never read.
I wanted to like this book more, especially since it involves boats and I have been a boat designer for over 30 years. I really hate it when an author uses boats as part of the story but fails to do the required research and writes stupid stuff that shows they know nothing about boats. I thought Mr. Becker was doing fairly well, until he described the Yacht as a Selene (a long distance cruising, displacement hulled yacht) as having a top speed over 40 knots. For those of you who don't know much about boats, the only way to get that boat to go 40 knots is to drop it from an airplane!Overall the writing was fast paced, which I like, and the story seemed to move along well without too many trips to the past to take it off course. The story was a bit predictable. Some of the details, especially toward the end, were a bit confusing and I couldn't picture them in my mind. My biggest issue was the ending that seemed to leave a few questions unanswered, like I would have to read the next book or two in the series to get answers to those. I am still debating whether the book was good enough to invest the time to find out. It is probably a good idea to read these in order!
A great intro to the Kurt Hunter mystery series! Having worked for Merrill Stevens in their Diner Key shipyard on Biscayne Bay for about 3 years in the sixties it was like old times revisiting some very familiar places with Kurt @ the helm! Steve has done it again with a very fine series in the making and I am onboard for Backwater Channel!
Enjoyed the story.Another exciting South Florida adventure. If you liked this book read:Michael Reisig - Road to Key West SeriesJames W. Hall - Thorn SeriesMike Pettit - Jack Marsh Action Thrillers Wayne Stinnett - Jesse McDermitt SeriesEnjoy !
I recently started reading Steven Becker books on my kindle and I really love them.... you feel as though you are totally immersed in the adventures he has created...I anxiously await more Kurt Hunter books... Thank you Steven Becker for your creations.
This is an entertaining book, well developed characters, and well described locales and scenery. There are a few problems with people's actions in relation to the overall story, but it is still a developing series. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book/series to anyone who likes thrillers.
It was a good read introducing the characters for the series.Even though I’ll probably never visit the area, I can picture what the weather, mangroves, tides, etc are like.Looking forward to the series and the “Barney Fife†adventures of Kurt Hunter.
