I have wanted to do mosaics all my life and never have... BUT! This book is so amazing that I am on-fire to get started asap! This book is fabulous for its designs alone! I ooh-ed and ahhh-ed every time I flipped to the next page of patterns and colors! I can't tell you if the directions are good or not yet because I have zero experience. I just received the book in today's mail and can't put it down... I don't even have any tools or supplies yet. What I can say is that this book has inspired me to finally get started! I also love that it's spiral bound, "terrific idea", the book stays open with no effort, and is nice and flat and easy to read while you're working. It's also such a great size! Hardcover part is 8 inches tall and 6.5 inches wide when closed and just shy of 13 inches wide when open. I'm looking at it so easily as I type this and glance over to look at it. Oh, I can go and on, but instead I'm going outside to drain and clean my leaky concrete birdbath and get it prepped for a mosaic lining and transform it into a thing of beauty. I gotta get going! I would think that there must be a design in this book to suit almost anyone's fancy... especially beginners like me. In fact, I think it would be a great book to start a little mosaic workshop group with! Share the experience and ideas with friends! There are plenty of books that can show techniques if this one doesn't go into details enough, and don't forget YouTube for tutorials, but the wealth and variety of designs and color schemes in this book are lovely and easily accessed. It's eye candy! Wonderful layout! The book starts out with a brief introduction by the author and an explanation of how to use this terrific little book, (6.75" X 8") though 249 pages of cover-to-cover inspiration is no little thing. The next section entitled "Inspirations" is a gallery of original works by various mosaic artists, followed by Materials and Tools, then techniques (which covers color selection, design and application.) Finally, 190 pages of patterns! What I like best about the page layout in the pattern section is that each pattern (shown as a scale drawing) includes a PHOTOGRAPH of an actual mosaic, rather than just a colored line drawing. In addition, along with the scale drawing and photo are a suggested color palette, a key indicating level of difficulty, plus lots of notes offering ideas for combinations and directions for working the design (such as starting points and direction.) The patterns range from very simple to involved. There's a section dealing with the alphabet and numbers that shows one style letter, upper and lower case, but each letter is done in a different tiled design. This book is worth every penny. If I had to offer a negative, I would say that it, like too many of the mosaic books, doesn't go into outdoor application deep enough. I would really like to find a book that addresses that issue thoroughly. But then, this is primarily a pattern book.
This book is not new, but is highly recommended by mosaic artists as a great beginner book. There are a lot of photo instructions, and color-codes for tiles and grout combinations. I found the actual art pieces rather dated, and not my style, but I would recommend this book for beginners as it is packed with a lot of great tips.
As a mosaic artist, there are times my creative side needs a boost. This book has some excellent ideas and is a good resource for technical help.
Please don't buy this book. It is just a waste of money. The information is very superficial and will be of no use. Buy "Mosaic: Techniques and Traditions" and "The encyclopedia of mosaic techniques" to start working with mosaics.This is not at all a mosaic bible.
This book is very good for someone new to mosaic as I am. It has very simple designs and explains the color choices very simply. I will be using this book frequently.
I had borrowed the book from a friend and as I'm just starting mosaics I found it very informative, with loads of ideas and hints to able the beginner to manage the mosaics, I Love it, so decided I couldn't do without one of these books of my very own.If anyone is looking for a very good book to begin mosaics, this is the one to purchase.
It is the best book available. I looked for other books but this was by far the most authoritative and helpful.
